What can I say? Exorcisms, witches, and demons . . . Oh my!!!
The year is 1810, five children stumble upon an ancient, terrifying secret that will affect the rest of their lives. While playing near an old oak at the edge of the forest, Henry, Howard, Rachel, Phillip, and Thalia come across an age-old artefact that will unleash an an unimaginable evil that will follow them to adulthood.
Mr. Le Tourneau gave me the opportunity to read this horror gem, and I absolutely loved it. I could not put it down.
It starts off in the early 1800s, Europe. Childhood friends go out into the forbidden forest. One of the main characters, Thalia, finds a necklace from a murdered, naked woman. She feels like it was calling to her. So what does she do? She, of course, takes it. That is when things start to change.
The demon that possesses her? Lilith. Lilith takes over a child’s body, and is just plain creepy. Her friends see that something is not right with her, they find out the neighbor that moved in, is one who has grown up performing exorcisms.
She succeeds in the exorcism, and later retires, and makes sure her granddaughter, Ada, does not continue on the same path.
Fast forward, they are all married, and the problem follows. I will just leave it there.
If you like gore, and not easily put off by sensitive manners such as rape, and others, this is the book for you. Eating of humans, the mating of two demons to make a super demon, yada yada yada, you have the perfect book to add to your bookshelves.
I give Richard Le Tourneau 5/5 for the story, and it is awesome gore and setting.
